Staff remote working guide

What tools do I need to work from home?

Via a Browser

It is possible to access University emails, shared documents in Sharepoint, and other files all via a web Browser. This can be done on a non-SHU device and doesn’t require you to install any software. Please see guides for more information.

Phone calls via Jabber

The application is already installed on SHU devices and can be installed on a personal computer too. More information on setting up Jabber can be found at Cisco Jabber and Working Remotely

Using VPN

If you are working on a SHU laptop and need to securely connect to the network use the connect to SHU VPN app. This will give you access to N drive and will allow you to use the Outlook app as normal. It will also give you access to secure sites without entering your username and password e.g. the Staff Intranet.

If you have recently upgraded to Windows 10, you may need to enter the VPN address the first time you connect which is vpn.shu.ac.uk.

Using Remote Desktop

Remote desktop can be used to give you access to some applications like SITS when working off campus. Capacity is limited for remote desktop so please only use this feature if you can’t work in any other way. More details for using Remote Desktop can be found at Working Remotely Using Remote Desktop.
