Getting Back into Study: Refresher Guide for Students (HWLS): Developing - Academic Skills

Part of being a student is having to write academic pieces of work, manage your own time, produce presentations and all of that stuff that goes with it! Our Skills Centre offers inclusive academic skills development to all students at SHU. We offer online group sessions, small group feedback seminars, 1-1 appointments and virtual drop-ins for all students to help you to develop your academic skills throughout your studies. Some of our most popular topics include:

• Progressing through your studies

Referencing!!!!

Yes, you still have to reference, despite it being far easier to trace information these days. Your readers want a handy, quick way of finding your references and it's good academic practice to boot. And by demonstrating your reading of quality sources around your subject you may get better marks!

We have comprehensive guidance on using our referencing system, APA 7th edition. We also provide workshops on how to reference and use our referencing software, RefWorks. So please familiarise yourself with it, and seek help if you need it. You can find all the information you need about referencing and the help and support we offer on the next page.
