Library Online: COVID updates

View books in the library with our new Request and View service

by Lizzie Seals on 2021-04-19T08:45:00+01:00 in COVID updates | Comments

Do you want to view books in the library, almost like you're browsing the shelves? We're introducing a new service for students and staff which allows you to request books and other items to view and use in the library, without taking them home, and we're calling this new service Request and View.

As the shelves are currently closed for browsing, Request and View is an alternative way for you to see multiple titles in the library and view them in the building. It also should be useful for those of you studying subject areas with those big books - we’re looking at you: art, design and photography - where you might not want to carry all those heavy books home with you. It also means you can request 'reference only' books to use in the library. We've created Request and View with you in mind!

Tell me more!

Make your request on Library Search, wait for your email to say it’s ready, book your learning space in the library, and you’re ready to go! Your requests will be available for you to access for 7 days, and within this time you can access them as many times as you like. But remember, you won't be able to take these items out of the library.

If you want to use books or other items at home you should use the Click and Collect or Postal Loans service instead.

What items can you request?

You can use Request and View  to access any book in the library, including the reference-only copies. It also includes some multimedia items such as DVDs.

You can’t request print journals, but many of these are available online via Library Search. If you find something you would like to access but you can’t request it - let us know

How it works

To use the Request and View service you will need to find your items using Library Search, look for the request option, and choose ‘view in library only’.

We’ll email you when your items are ready to view, which will include instructions on where to go and what to do. It’s essential that you book a learning space in advance of visiting the library so you have somewhere to view your requests. If you would prefer a desk space, without a computer, then choose ‘desk’ when you’re booking your learning space.

Request and View items will be kept for you for 7 days, and within this time you can use them as many times as you like. But remember, you cannot take them out of the library.
