Essential Skills Portal: Connect with other students

Connect with other students

Student Connect is a new way to chat online with an experienced Hallam Student Mentor!

The service is available to all students studying at level 4 (first year of undergrad study).

How to create an account and login

  • To access Student Connect you need to login to Blackboard and select the Studiosity box which can be found on the homepage:

  • If it is your first time using one of the Studiosity services you will need to create a free account.
  • Once you have created your account you need to login to Studiosity and select the "Student Connect" service. This will connect to you to an available mentor who most closely matches the course you are studying.
  • You can select if you would like to speak to the mentor using voice and text chat or just text.

You Studiosity account also allows you to access two other services, Writing Feedback and Connect Live. Please be aware that these two services are limited to a combined total of 8 uses in an academic year. Student Connect is currently unlimited.

You can talk to the mentors about almost anything to do with your studies:

  • What it is like studying your course. Whenever you use Student Connect the system will try and connect you to a mentor who is studying on the same course as you or a similar course.
  • Any general questions you have about university life and how to manage your time.
  • How to structure your assignments and understand assessment criteria.
  • Help understanding key concepts or theories from your course.
  • How to find sources of information for your assignments.

About the Mentors

All Student Mentors are currently studying at level 6 or higher at Sheffield Hallam and are trained, friendly and approachable. You can chat to a mentor using either text or voice chat via the digital platform. Mentors can only see your first name in the chat for confidentiality.

There are no silly questions and speaking to a mentor can sometimes feel like daunting then speaking to course mates or your tutors.

When you can access the service

The Student Connect service is available from 12pm-10pm every day – just login to Blackboard and select the Studiosity box to get started.
