Maths and Stats Support

Workshops

These are group sessions with teaching of a specific topic rather than individual support.  Sometimes we have workshops specifically designed for particular departments which are only available to students within a particular module or course which we refer to as 'departmental' workshops whereas our 'general' workshops others are open to all students and staff at Sheffield Hallam.
We are working at increasing the number of workshops we offer and will add dates during the academic year.  If you are interested in a specific workshop which is unavailable or you can't make the time, Register an interest and we will email out dates as they are added to the calendar.

Note: You will need to log in with your google email studentID@my.shu.ac.uk to register an interest

Getting started with quantitative research

Many students rush their study design and end up with data that doesn't answer their questions of interest.  In this workshop we take you through the key considerations for designing an effective study including examples from different disciplines, suggestions for questionnaires and common errors.

Introduction to hypothesis testing

This workshop gives an introduction to the terminology used in inferential statistics to enable you to interpret the results of your analysis or just be able to understand statistical results in literature you read.  We will cover all the steps of carrying out a hypothesis test including p-values, statistical significance, confidence intervals, effect sizes and checking the assumption of normality.

Using statistical software: Jamovi introduction

There are several computer packages available for analysing data but for those who have not been taught a particular package before, we find that Jamovi is the simplest.  It is a free software package which can be accessed through AppsAnywhere or downloaded directly from the jamovi website https://www.jamovi.org/.

This workshop gives you an overview to using Jamovi including importing data, editing data, producing summary statistics, charts and some basic statistical tests.  Once you are familiar with the basics, we have a large range of resources for different statistical tests you can use as well as sessions with a statistics advisor to get support with your research.

Choosing the right statistical technique

One of the aspects of research students struggle with most is choosing the right charts and tests for your data.  We talk your through the key terminology needed to choose the right techniques and questions you need to ask yourself to ensure you pick the right technique.
