Open Research

The Open Research Network

As part of the University response to Open Research developments, the Library is setting up an Open Research Network to support and enhance Open Research practices at Sheffield Hallam.

We are looking for people who would like to join the Network and become Open Research Champions. Open Research Champions will work in their institute, college, department or service to support and promote Open Research. The intention is that as the Open Research Network becomes established, it will be a self-organising and self-sustaining grassroots network.

Please read the information on this page to find out more about what's involved and how to join.

Who can become an Open Research Champion?

You do not need to have any experience in Open Research. This opportunity is open to anyone interested in Open Research. We welcome researchers, early career researchers, doctoral students, professional services staff, and anyone else with an interest in the aims of Open Research and promoting its benefits.

What is required of me?

Your role will be to liaise with colleagues in various teams to support and promote Open Research in your institute / college / department / service area.

  • These would be SHU wide events, held around four times a year

  • Keeping up to date with developments in Open Research

  • Promoting the use and benefits of open research activities in team meetings, at away days, conferences etc.

  • Actively practicing Open Research e.g. sharing work via Open Access, and sharing primary research data where applicable

It is anticipated that this would take no more than 1-2 hours a month.

What are the benefits of becoming a champion?

Becoming an Open Research Champion is an opportunity for personal and professional development. The benefits include:

  • Opportunities to meet and network with colleagues across the University

  • Develop knowledge and skills in Open Research

  • Increase your own impact through the practice of Open Research

  • Boost your CV

  • Develop transferable skills, such as advocacy and teamwork

  • Evidence of professional activity

What support will be provided?

You will be given support and training in the role where needed. You will become part of a network which will offer peer-to-peer support through regular meetings alongside informal networking opportunities.
