Visitors' guide to the Library: Membership

This is a guide to Sheffield Hallam University Library for students and staff from other universities and members of the public.

Visitor access to the library

Visitor

If you intend to visit us once or a few times over a short period, come to the Library Reception with photo ID and proof of home address and you can be signed in as a visitor.  Refugee or asylum seekers; if you do not have proof of address, please bring your BRP card or other document which evidences your refugee or asylum seeker status.  This is limited to staffed hours.  If you are aged 16 or 17, please see the Schools and Colleges Guide for more information.

If you want to renew your membership, you can visit the Hallam Help point at Adsetts Library or Collegiate Library, and one of the staff there will take you through the renewal process.  Please remember to bring your proof of entitlement documents with you.  Alternatively, please email associatemember@shu.ac.uk and attach the documents to your message.

If you are a Subscription member, you will need to visit our online store to pay the £30 annual membership fee and then forward the payment confirmation email to associatemember@shu.ac.uk attaching your photo ID and proof of address.

If you would like to change the type of your Associate Membership, please click on the 'Change your membership category' tab in this box.

Please contact us at associatemember@shu.ac.uk and provide us with the necessary supporting documents if you need to change your membership category - e.g. SCONUL A, B or C to subscription, or SCONUL R to Associate Member (Reference).

If you would like to switch from Associate Member (Borrowing) to Associate Member (Reference), or the other way around, you can do this by filling in our online form.

If you have lost or damaged your SHUcard or had it stolen and your Associate Membership is still valid, you will need to get another card in order to continue using the Library.  Please follow the relevant link below.

Becoming a member of the library

If you are thinking of registering to use the library for the first time, please see below.

If you have been an Associate member before, your membership has expired within the last 6 months and you still have an Associate member card, please see the "Renew your Membership" instructions in the box above.

If your Associate membership expired within the last 6 months but you don't have an Associate member card, please see the "Get a replacement SHUcard" instructions above.

Associate Member (Reference)

If you are 18 or over and want to come in and work in the libraries but don't need to borrow any books, you can register as an Associate Member (Reference).  Please complete our online form to apply.  You will need to upload your photo ID and proof of home address, e.g. passport and utility bill.  

 

Associate Member (Borrowing) for free

If you 18 or over and fall into one of the categories in the table below, you can apply to become an Associate Member (Borrowing) for free.  This enables you to borrow up to 3 books at a time.  All of them can be borrowed for 1 week and will be renewed automatically by the library system unless someone else requests them.  DVDs from the Film Collection and audio visual equipment can only be borrowed by Sheffield Hallam students and staff.

 

Associate Member (Borrowing) by subscription

If you are 18 or over and want to borrow but aren't eligible under any of the categories, you can pay £30 per year to become an Associate Member (Borrowing).

If you fall into one of the following categories, you can register for Associate Membership of the Library free of charge.

What do I do next?

Please complete our online form to apply for Associate Membership.  You will have to upload your proofs of eligibility (see above).

 

SCONUL Access

If you are a student at another UK university, you might be able to become an Associate Member of Sheffield Hallam's Library through the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) Access Scheme.  To find out more and to sign up for the scheme, visit the SCONUL Access webpage.

You need to apply for SCONUL Access first, receive your approval email and then complete our online form to apply for Associate Membership of our library.  You will need to upload your university or college ID, proof of address, proof of your SCONUL Access registration, and a photo for your Sheffield Hallam card.

Become an Associate Member (Borrowing) by subscription

If you are over 18 and not eligible for associate membership under any of the categories above, you can apply to join as a subscription member.  The subscription fee for 1 year's membership is £30.
