Visitors' guide to the Library: Membership

This is a guide to Sheffield Hallam University Library for students and staff from other universities and members of the public.

What kinds of membership are there?

Visitor

If you intend to visit us once or a few times over a short period, come to the Library Reception with photo ID and proof of home address and you can be signed in as a visitor.  This is limited to staffed hours.  If you are aged 16 or 17, please see the Schools and Colleges Guide for more information.

 

Associate Member (Reference)

If you are 18 or over and want to come in and work in the libraries but don't need to borrow any books, you can register as an Associate Member (Reference).  Please complete our online form to apply.  You will need to upload your photo ID and proof of home address, e.g. passport and utility bill.  

 

Associate Member (Borrowing) for free

If you 18 or over and fall into one of the categories in the table below, you can apply to become an Associate Member (Borrowing) for free.  This enables you to borrow up to 3 books at a time.  All of them can be borrowed for 1 week and will be renewed automatically by the library system unless someone else requests them.  DVDs from the Film Collection and audio visual equipment can only be borrowed by Sheffield Hallam students and staff.

 

Associate Member (Borrowing) by subscription

If you are 18 or over and want to borrow but aren't eligible under any of the categories, you can pay £30 per year to become an Associate Member (Borrowing).

If you fall into one of the following categories, you can register for Associate Membership of the Library free of charge.

Please apply through the SCONUL Access scheme to become an Associate Member of Sheffield Hallam University Library.  See SCONUL Access information below.

What do I do next?

Please complete our online form to apply for Associate Membership.  You will have to upload your proofs of eligibility (see above).

 

SCONUL Access

If you are a student at another UK university, you might be able to become an Associate Member of Sheffield Hallam's Library through the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) Access Scheme.  To find out more and to sign up for the scheme, visit the SCONUL Access webpage.

You need to apply for SCONUL Access first and then complete our online form to apply for Associate Membership of our library.  You will need to upload your university or college ID, proof of address, proof of your SCONUL Access registration, and a photo for your Sheffield Hallam card.

Become an Associate Member (Borrowing) by subscription

If you are over 18 and not eligible for associate membership under any of the categories above, you can apply to join as a subscription member.  The subscription fee for 1 year's membership is £30.

Replacement SHUcard

If you have lost or damaged your SHUcard or had it stolen, you will need to get another one in order to use the Library.  Please follow the relevant link below.
