Library Code of Conduct

The Library provides a comprehensive range of services and resources to support learning, teaching and research.

The Library Code of Conduct applies to all users of Hallam Library and exists to ensure equitable and inclusive access for all.  The code sets out what you can expect from the Library, what is required from you in return, and what happens if you breach the code.

You can expect:

  • To be treated with courtesy and respect
  • To be listened to, and your feedback to be welcomed and responded to
  • Your personal data to be used according to the University’s Privacy and GDPR policy 
  • Learning and research spaces in Adsetts Library and Collegiate Library which:
    • are welcoming, safe, and clean and open 24/7
    • include a mix of silent, quiet, collaborative, and bookable spaces
    • provide PCs, specialist software, scanning and printing
    • provide food and drink in cafes, vending machines, microwaves and hot water
  • Expert information, advice, and guidance:
    • HallamHelp during core hours, and answers to enquiries 24/7 via online Library Chat
    • notifications to help you collect, renew, and return any borrowed items
    • subject guidance
    • opportunities to develop study skills, information literacy, and digital skills, including citation and reference management
    • copyright advice and guidance
    • support for scholarly communication and open research, including open access publishing, research data management and research metrics
  • Access to scholarly information resources to support your learning:
    • a multidisciplinary library collection of books, journals, databases, archives and primary sources
    • accessible formats
    • opportunity to recommend resources for the Library
    • an online library account, Library Search, and digital services including reading lists online
    • access to resources at other libraries through an inter-library loans and SCONUL Access

You are required to:

  • Carry your SHU card or visitor pass with you at all times and present it to staff if required
  • Observe public health guidance
  • Abide by the University regulations and statutory requirements relevant to your status, including but not limited to: the Student Code of conduct, Anti-Harassment policy, Regulations for the use of IT facilities and learning resources, and the Staff Code of Behaviour
  • Respect all other library users and library staff
  • Respect and appropriately use resources and equipment, including items you borrow
  • Choose the right space for your activity and behave accordingly, including turning your phone to silent in silent areas
  • Consume hot food in the café only: takeaway food and alcohol is not allowed in the library
  • Seek help and alert staff to any concerns or issues you have
  • To ask permission before taking photographs or filming within the library buildings
  • You are responsible for your belongings, please do not leave them unattended
  • Abide by our guidelines on bringing children or guests into the library

Breach of the Library Code of Conduct can result in:

For all users

  • Being asked to leave the library immediately
For students
  • Any breach where behaviour contravenes this code, including anti-social or disruptive behaviour, initial action will be taken by the Director of Library and Campus Services
    • This action can include suspension of access to both campus libraries
  • Repeated behaviour will be reported to the Student Policy and Compliance Team for investigation under the formal disciplinary procedures
  • Serious breaches, such as incidents of hate crime or sexual violence, will result in immediate exclusion from the library.

For visitors

  • Being asked to leave and access privileges revoked
