We’re delighted to let you know that Library laptop loans are back! They are available to borrow now, from Adsetts Library, so you can work flexibly on or off campus. We’ve listened to your feedback about Library laptops and know that you’ve missed being able to borrow them.

Since the laptops have been out of action, the day loans have had a bit of a refresh and have been upgraded to Windows 10, and we have new laptops in the week loan locker for you.

Important things to know if you want to borrow a laptop:

  • We have day loan laptops (level 4 of Adsetts Library, in lockers next to the book returns area) and Week Loan Laptops (In the locker by the lift in the level 4 Cafe)
  • You need your SHUcard to borrow and return a laptop.
  • If you borrow a day loan laptop it will always be due back the following day before midnight, it doesn’t matter what time you borrow it.
  • Week loan laptops will be due back 7 days from when you borrowed it.
  • Laptops need to be returned to the same campus, locker, and bay they were borrowed on
  • If you are borrowing over the Christmas period, you’ll be able to keep a laptop longer - please check My Library Account for details.
  • You can take the laptops home with you, just make sure you log in whilst you’re still on-campus - this will ensure it works for you when you’re off-campus. Remember to take the laptop charger with you from the locker bay.

For further information and useful links, see our brief FAQ.

We’re working hard to have the laptops available at Collegiate Library as well, and we’ll let you know when these are ready.

A new collection has been added to the library gateway which brings together works created by current and former Hallam academics. The purpose of this collection is to increase the access and visibility of these materials, as well as to ensure their preservation. There are currently 933 items within this collection and this number will continue to grow as more material by Hallam authors is purchased. The collection is based on library catalogue records which have the note “Current or former academic at Sheffield Hallam University or Polytechnic”.

Books on a bookshelf

Please get in touch if you spot any existing titles on the library gateway that are yet to be included in the collection. The Hallam author collection is one of several collections all of which can be viewed here.

Students and staff are invited to recommend titles for the library to support learning and teaching. This can be done by completing a suggestion for purchase form.

We ask for details of the title and also the reason for the suggestion:

  • Are you recommending this resource for a particular course ?

  • Did a lecturer recommend this resource to you ?

  • If not, how did you find out about it ?

We are currently prioritising the purchase of digital resources that are on module reading lists or needed to support research, but we will consider other resources.

We cannot guarantee that we will purchase every item suggested, but we will keep you informed about what we do and do not purchase. Here are a couple of recent examples of purchases:

1. Ovenden-Hope, T., & Passy, R. (Eds.). (2021). Exploring teacher recruitment and retention contextual challenges from international perspectives  London: Routledge.

2. Botsman, R., & Rogers, R. (2010). What's mine is yours: the rise of collaborative consumption. New York: Harper Business.  (currently on order)
