English Literature databases

You'll find most articles you'll need for your studies in Library Search but, if you need more in-depth research, you may find these key journal databases for English useful. These databases index thousands of journal articles and may also link to the full text.

ProQuest One Literature This link opens in a new window
ProQuest One Literature (formerly known as Literature Online or LION) contains 3 million literature citations from thousands of journals, monographs, dissertations, and more than 500,00 primary works. These primary texts comprise of poetry, prose and drama and include rare and obscure texts, multiple versions, and non-traditional sources such as comics and theatre performances. The coverage ranges from the 8th century to the present day.

The database provides access to more than 1,200 full text journals, with oldest articles dating back to 1850. It also includes audio and video content through its Poets on Screen recordings of poets reading their own and others' work and the Shakespeare Audio Plays collection.
ProQuest One Literature is comprised of different literary collections, including early English and American works. The database includes collections that focus on Black, Latin American and South/Southeast Asian literature and writers.

The full text of current literature journals is made discoverable through the literary index - the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL).

Literature Online includes more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 323 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources, as well as access to the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) and MLA International Bibliography.
Includes biographies for 4,100 authors, and also online access to a number of reference works, such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms and The Encyclopedia of Post-Colonial Literatures in English . There are also links to relevant websites for primary texts and critical and biographical material.
MLA International Bibliography This link opens in a new window
MLA International Bibliography contains citations of critical works on literature, langauge, linguistics and folklore. It also covers natural and inverted languages.
Includes references to journal articles, books, chapters in books, and abstracts for some dissertations. (There are no abstracts available for records in this database.)

JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated.
The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines, primarily in the humanities and social sciences. JSTOR is a journal archive and does not include current or recent issues of journals. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, typically from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available in JSTOR.The following collections are available for users at SHU: Arts and Science I,II,III,IV and Arts and Sciences Complement. Together, they provide abstracts, indexing and full text coverage of journal articles, books, book chapters, dissertations, working papers and more, including deep indexing and full text from over 1000 important social science journals.
Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA) This link opens in a new window
Index and abstracts for health, social services, psychology, criminology, sociology, economics, politics, race relations and education. Currently contains over 312,000 records from 650 journals in 16 different countries, including the UK and US. Coverage is from 1987 onwards. Updated monthly, with more than 1500 records added per update.

A multi-disciplinary full text database covering business, health and medical, social sciences, education , science and technology, including core titles in the performing and visual arts, history, religion, philosophy, and language and literature. It includes both scholarly journals as well as market research and industry reports, working papers and full-text dissertations.

Scopus is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary abstract and database curated by subject matter experts. Scopus is also a citation index, which means that the records in the database contain information on citations made in that publication and it links that information so you can identify which publications have cited that one, and how many times a publication has been cited.

Web of Science provides access to a collection of databases. The default search is of the Web of Science Core Collection, which includes the Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Conference Proceedings Citation Index and Emerging Sources Citation Index. This enables you to search scholarly journals, books and proceedings in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities and navigate the citation network.

Although the overall range of content is from 1891 to 2000, the majority of back-files go up to 1995.
