Library Online: New students

Welcome

Hallam Library would like to welcome all new and returning students to the university. This page is a quick guide to what the library has to offer with useful links to our resources.

Sheffield Hallam University has two libraries, Adsetts Library and Collegiate Library. Both libraries are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, providing a welcoming and secure environment in which to work. Remember to bring your student card to access the libraries and our resources.

Using the library

There are over 2450 learning spaces in Collaborative, Quiet, and Silent study areas. You can either book a range of learning spaces in advance or use them without booking. You can make up to 14 bookings on resources up to 14 days in advance. If you need to print whilst working in the libraries you will need to credit your Papercut printing account, before sending your work to the printer.

Self-service library laptop loans are available from both libraries. Laptops are available to loan for one day or one week and can be used on or off campus.

The library uses self-service machines to allow you to borrow and return books 24 hours a day. As a student, you can borrow up to 25 books at a time and place up to 15 requests. The initial period for a standard loan is 1 week. Your loans will automatically renew for up to a year unless they are requested by another user. For more information on how you can borrow items, see here.

Discover Resources

To support you with the knowledge you need for your course, you can use Library Search to search our entire SHU collection. The library offers extensive online and physical resources for students to borrow. Students will have remote access to eJournals, eBooks, market research, newspapers, and video streaming as well as over 370 subject-related databases. For any material we do not have available in our collection, you can request this through the Document Supply Service.

You will have access to tailored Reading Lists Online through your BlackBoard module page. You can also use subject guides to help you discover course-specific resources.

Develop your Skills

The Library and Skills Centre offers a wide range of opportunities to develop your skills, including webinars, 1-1 appointments, bootcamps, and online resources. To get started, visit the Essential Skills Portal or come along to an online Welcome Week event.

If you need any support while working in the library, we have a Hallam Help point located near the entrance of both Adsetts and Collegiate libraries. Online support is available through student FAQ’s. You can contact the library through our Chat support service with any questions at any time.
