EBSCOhost Databases: New Look and New Features

New EBSCOhost interface

EBSCOhost is a database platform in which a range of databases from different subject areas are hosted for SHU users. On Monday 7th July 2025, all EBSCOhost databases accessed through SHU will be switching over to EBSCOhost’s new user interface. The user interface is about how the database looks on your screen, how things are laid out, and which features are available to support your use of the database. After the switchover on 7th July, EBSCOhost databases will look different and some of the features available will change.

If you have custom folders in an EBSCOhost database, you will need to export the contents of these folders before the switchover date. More information about how custom folders will be affected by the interface switchover is available on the second tab of this guide.

These pages will explain the key changes in the new interface. The guide will be added to and updated as more information becomes available. If you have any questions or difficulties around using EBSCOhost databases, please contact the library.

What do these databases look like?

Databases in the existing EBSCOhost interface currently look like the screenshot below:

You can use the tab at the top of this box to switch to see how these databases will look after the switchover.

After the switchover on 7th July, databases accessed in the new EBSCOhost interface will look like the following screenshot:

You can use the tab at the top of this box to see how these databases look now.

What won't change in the new interface

  • The content in each database will be the same when we switch over to the new interface. The switchover shouldn’t affect the results you get when running a search in an EBSCO database.
  • The principles of how you search a database (e.g. using AND/OR/NOT operators, phrase searching, truncation) also won’t change.
  • If you have created an individual account in MyEBSCO in the old interface, you will be able to use the same login details to log into MyEBSCO in the new interface.

An improved searching experience

The new EBSCOhost interface will ensure an improved database searching experience through providing:

  • A more accessible and streamlined interface.
  • Permanent links for searches and articles, rather than links that expire when your searching session ends (known as ‘session URLs’). You will now be able to copy the link from your browser bar to to save or share a search or an item in an EBSCOhost database.
  • Sticky filters. Any filters you apply will remain for your subsequent searches in that session. For example, you won’t have to reapply the Publication Date filter every time you change your search terms.
  • A more straightforward process for exporting items to RefWorks.
  • Easier to find saved records and searches.
  • The ability to download a word document containing the metadata from selected articles.
