Library Services school work experience - meet Rohan

Meet Rohan Sadiq
Rohan is a student at King Edwards School, Sheffield and joined us in Library Services for his work experience program in July 2022. Rohan spent two weeks with Library Services teams and experienced the full range of services and support that we offer.

From cataloging resources, experiencing student support, getting familiar with library spaces, discovering our vast resources online and getting to grips with the Dewey Decimal System, Rohan got a real taste of how the library contributes to student success at Sheffield Hallam University.

Q&A with Rohan
We asked Rohan some questions about his time with us and he also shared his own thoughts below.

Q1 – did you have any expectations before you came here?
My expectations of working in a library weren’t very exciting, but I found that working in a library is a very broad job description that requires different skill sets like IT and people skills depending on what it is that you do.

Q2 – what have you enjoyed the most?
I personally enjoyed the practical sessions with staff where I got a taste of what it is they do on a day to day basis. I found that not one day was the same and I was getting to experience all aspects of the library.

Q3 – did you learn anything unexpected about Library Services?
Many would expect that moving books around on shelves is all there is to working in a library, however, I found that the SHU library was a much bigger service then I had expected, with multiple teams and departments covering different jobs within the library.

Q4 – and in your own words…
I have really enjoyed meeting all the staff and getting to know the inner workings of a library like this. Everyone was very welcoming and approachable if you needed help with anything.
