Short stories and poems for Sheffield

As part of Sheffield Galleries celebration and exhibition of the art and life of Sheffield artist John Hoyland, the Humanities Department hosted creative writing workshops led by novelist and lecturer in creative writing, Dr Yvonne Battle-Felton. The pieces created through these workshops were submitted to Sheffield Museums to be exhibited with the paintings and have been collected by Hallam Library for publication through the Short Edition platform and story dispensers.

John Hoyland exhibition

Born in Sheffield, John Hoyland (1934-2011) is regarded as one of Britain’s leading abstract painters. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of his passing, this exhibition in partnership with The John Hoyland Estate showcases some of the very last works he created.

The exhibition in Millennium Galleries ran from Saturday 3 July 2021 - Sunday 10 October 2021 and you can read more about Hoyland's work here.

Also in the Central Library

These works were produced as part of the Sheffield Libraries Creativity During Covid Project, 2020.  Every day during the first national lockdown, Sheffield Libraries posted a creative prompt to inspire people to write, feel or think imaginatively.  The collection as a whole, presents a snapshot of our shared experience during the early months of the pandemic.

Off the Shelf Festival of Words

We worked in partnership with Off the Shelf Festival, Millennium Galleries and Sheffield Libraries to bring Short Edition to the gallery walkway that connects Hallam Square and the Winter Gardens so next time you're passing through, stop and check it out!
