Get up to speed with the update to referencing in APA 7th style

by Carl Lomax on 2021-09-28T09:18:00+01:00 in Library | 0 Comments

The Library is providing support for the transition to APA 7th for all assessments.  Extensive guidance is available on the revised Referencing at Sheffield Hallam University online guide and there are additional resources to support new and returning students; the ‘Quick guide to referencing’, ‘Your guide to referencing – how to use APA 7 edition’, and ‘Your guide to APA 7 referencing – sources and examples’.  There is also a short video for returning students covering the minor changes and further assistance will be available from Library Chat with ad-hoc referencing queries.

A few minor changes to be aware of:

There are no changes to in-text citations:  they remain author, date and page number (where needed).  Although you can now include et al. from the first time for more than three authors.

  • Make sure DOIs for journal articles/eBooks are included wherever possible, in the newest format https://doi.org/10.1080/10286632.2018.1495713.

  • If there is no DOI, include the web address, no need to put ‘Retrieved from’ anymore (unless you are using a format that requires a retrieved date such as some social media formats)

  • No need to include the publisher location for books anymore

  • Include the fullest date possible for websites where available

  • Include the database name in your report references
