Supporting students with their referencing

This page contains materials to support your students develop their referencing skills. This includes two referencing teaching toolkits which contain a range of teaching resources, for example, workshop materials including a lesson plan, handouts, video resources and details of post-session activities that can reinforce learning.

Referencing toolkit 1: Introduction to referencing and APA

This is a one hour workshop or lecture aimed at students who are new to referencing. It has interactive activities and can be delivered in a lecture or workshop setting. There are also optional add-on sets of subject slides included which highlight how to reference sources common to specific disciplines. The toolkit contains:

  • PowerPoint presentation with interactive student activities to introduce why we reference, plagiarism and the basics of referencing using APA.
  • Lesson plan including learning outcomes and description of the range of activities.
  • Student hand-outs.
  • Post-session reinforcement through Interactive online learning resource. Optional add on slides for the presentation which provide subject contextualisation.

Referencing toolkit 2: Using ProQuest RefWorks

This one hour workshop introduces students to RefWorks. There are currently 2 versions of RefWorks available, Legacy RefWorks and ProQuest RefWorks which is also known as New RefWorks. This session is based on ProQuest RefWorks (new version). The toolkit contains:

  • PowerPoint presentation with student activities.
  • Lesson plan including learning outcomes and description of activities.
  • Student worksheet.
  • Post-session reinforcement use of short videos.

Collaborative partner toolkits

Collaborative partners can access the toolkits from the Staff tab on the Hallam/partner website. The RefWorks toolkit includes customised resources for partners.
