SHU Library and Skills Centre Teachmeet

Welcome

Our first Library & Skills Teachmeet at Sheffield Hallam University was held on 24th May 2018, Our theme was:

Supporting learners who study at a distance

How do we effectively meet the needs of learners who are frequently (or always) off campus - this might include distance, part-time, placement and commuting students.

At the event we shared our ideas and experience in supporting our students in Higher Education who are frequently off campus. Our event was aimed at both librarians and study skills practitioners, working in our region and a little further a field.

Some of the attendees delivered a short, informal presentation of up to 10 minutes to fit in with our theme. These presentations related to any aspect of distance learner support such as webinars, online resources, use of social media, or any other innovative practices that you might have developed.

In the afternoon we also took the opportunity to share our individual experiences in a round table discussion.

Liam Bullingham - University of Sheffield ~ Dedicated Services Health Check

I am liaison librarian at The University of Sheffield Library, supporting five departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences. I increasingly deliver information and digital literacy sessions online now, both for teaching embedded in curricula and for our IDL Workshops and the Doctoral Development Programme.

As more departments provide distance learning courses and students choose to study off-campus, I'm aiming to build my knowledge and understanding around what distance and part-time learners want from the Library. This presentation reports back on the findings of a short survey of Information School students. Going forward, I'd like to use data we take from our reading lists software to see how distance learners might use the platform compared with on-campus students.
