RLO: Working with Reading Lists Online

Publishing your RLO

You need to Publish your reading list once it is completed.

Publishing the reading list will make it available on the Blackboard module site and accessible to your students.  Remember the list must be linked to the correct module code in the reading list system module Hierarchy for this to happen (instructions linked below):

It will also send the list to Review so that the Library can check the reading list and order any resources that are not already available.

How to Publish your reading list

In the yellow toolbar at the top of your reading list you will see the message "Unpublished changes! Your changes have been saved, but not published". To the right of this is a black button to Publish. Once you click on the button to publish the list will become available to the students on the Blackboard module site, and send the list to the Library for Review.

Linking your reading list to the module code

You need to link your reading list to the module code in the reading list system hierarchy so that students can access it from the Bb module site.

You can see if your list has already been linked to a module code by checking the information listed underneath the title.  If the reading list is not linked to a module code, follow these steps:

  • Click on Edit
  • Choose Hierarchy and student numbers
  • Search for the module by name or by module code
  • Add the latest Student numbers
  • Click Save

Overview of the Review process

What happens to my reading list in Review?

  • Staff in the Library Resources Team will check to make sure that all the items are available in the Library.  A maximum of 75 items will be checked.
  • Essential items - staff will check for multi-access eBooks. If one is not available the team will contact you and your Learning and Teaching Support Librarian so that you can discuss with the Librarian how best to proceed. This might be changing the item from Essential to Background and substituting an alternative title as Essential, or digitising an essential chapter. Two one week loan print copies will automatically be ordered.
  • Background items - staff will check and order one print copy if not already in stock. Once the Review is completed, the Resources Team will notify you and you will be able to publish the list and start adding new items if required.

Publish Checklist

Here is a quick checklist of things to do before you publish your RLO:

  • Are all the links working?
  • Has an importance status been set for each item?
  • Have the student numbers been added?
  • Has the module code been added?
  • Have you made use of annotations where necessary?
  • Have you used a variety of sources for accessibility?
  • Have  you considered a diverse range of authors?
  • Have you requested any digitised readings that are required?
  • If you are resubmitting an RLO after updating it, have you checked Library Search for new editions of books? If there are any new editions have you checked to make sure any specific chapters you have referred to are the same in the new edition?
