This page provides information and links on key professional bodies and other official organisations related to Nursing and Midwifery. It is a good idea to become familiar with relevant professional bodies and how they can be useful for you in your studies and your professional life.

Nursing and Midwifery Council

  • The NMC share news and updates about their work, projects and priorities on a dedicated area of their website.
  • Nurses and midwives need to go through revalidation every 3 years in order to maintain their registration with the NMC. You can find out about the requirements and how to meet them by visiting the revalidation site.
    • Resources include presentations on CPD, feedback, reflective accounts, reflective discussion and confirmation.
    • There is also guidance on how to store your completed reflective discussion and confirmation forms in either paper or electronic format.
  • The NMC produces Standards for Nurses and Standards for Midwives
  • They also published an information document for midwives, women and families and any other interested parties, Practicing as a Midwife in the UKIt describes the NCMs approach to the regulation of midwives but it is not a regulatory standard. It contains sections relating to each of the NMC’s statutory functions: the education of midwives, registration and revalidation, standards and guidance, and fitness to practise.

Royal College of Midwives

  • Their mission is focused on:
    • Promoting midwifery, quality maternity services and professional standards
    • Supporting members, individually and collectively
    • Influencing on behalf of members and the women and families they care for
  • The RCM represents the interests of midwives in all four UK countries individually and collectively.

Health Education England

Health Education England (HEE) is responsible for improving the quality of healthcare for the people and patients of England through education, training and lifelong development of staff.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) aims to champion the pharmacy profession.

Their Competency Framework for all Prescribers has been adopted by the NMC as their standards of competency for prescribing practice. This means that NMC professionals need to follow this framework to be considered to be safe and effective prescribers.
