Warm-up: Think, Pair, Share

In the warm-up activity, we asked participants to reflect on challenges faced in Higher Education related to teaching critical thinking skills.

In the afternoon, we then grouped these issues into themes, which formed the basis of one of our activities.

Activity 1: Challenges around Critical Thinking

In the first activity, groups had been given a different challenge around critical thinking.

Participants discussed the challenge using flipchart paper, in relation to 5 stakeholder groups. These were:

  1. Home undergraduate students
  2. Disabled students
  3. International students
  4. Academic staff
  5. Participants as Library/Skills staff

For each stakeholder group, the following were discussed:

  • How might this challenge affect this group in particular?
  • How might this group respond to this challenge?
  • What support might this group benefit from in relation to this challenge?

Activity 2: What we can do

In the final activity, participants discussed current and planned teaching of critical thinking skills. Groups discussed the following:

  1. What are you doing currently in relation to teaching critical thinking skills and tackling misinformation?
  2. What new ideas could you implement in the future? Have today's presentations and discussions inspired any actions you could take?
